Barbara Hepworth/British Sculptor...Continuation of A Sense of Place

In an earlier post I talked about a Sense of Place and how it inhabits an artist and their work.  I would like to share here two quotes from Barbara Hepworth(click for link) who is a famed British Sculptor. I will post other artists views of their sense of place as well for further discussion.  If you are an artist or art lover think about how where you live or have lived effects your art and your being.  I think it is not always so obvious...go back and look at your work or your favorite artists work, especially if it is not specifically a landscape painting of a place....think how these things have influenced you knowingly or unknowingly...it is where you body and mind have resided.
I cannot write anything about landscape without writing about the human figure and the human spirit inhabiting the landscape, for me, the whole art sculpture is a fusion of these two element – the balance of sensation and the evocation of man in his universe. Every work in sculpture is either a figure I see, or a sensation I have, whether in Yorkshire, Cornwall or Greece, or the Mediterranean.

- Whenever I am embraced by land and seascape I draw ideas for new sculptures; new forms to touch and walk around, new people to embrace, with an exactitude of form that those without sight can hold and realize… …It is essentially practical and passionate.
