Roos is a plein air painter in a climate that most would find very challenging.  I know living here on the Gulf Coast of Florida and looking at Roos videos of her painting in the wind chilled beaches of Holland, that I get cold just in the viewing.  In listening to her from an interview on film I understand better why it is so important for her and other plein air artists to work out of doors away from the studio.  They are intuitive artist and being there with their subject looking and making decisions on the spot make the work more real and fresher.  I think of the impressionist who also felt the same way, and an American artist by the name of Walter Anderson(click) ( who strapped himself to a palm tree to paint the effects of a hurricane), a Mississippi artist.  To be in touch with nature and its ever changing moment, I think takes discipline yet an amazing openness...almost two opposites at one time.  I think being an artist of any kind is not for the faint of heart..it takes discipline, fortitude, ability to withstand criticism day to day, ability to face rejection on an ongoing basis, yet to continue to believe in oneself in a deep and abiding way.  I think Roos Schuring has found a way to do just that with great success.
